Original B/L, telex release, sea waybill: three ways to release a container.
The document that releases the box decides how fast you clear and who holds the goods until payment.
In short. Original B/L, telex (express) release and sea waybill explained — what each is, when to use it, the risk to the supplier, and why the choice affects your free time.
Original bill of lading
A negotiable document of title. The carrier releases the container at destination to whoever surrenders an original. The supplier keeps control until they hand it over — which is why it pairs with L/C and D/P, where the bank passes the original to the buyer on payment. The cost is time: originals travel by courier, and if the vessel arrives first the container waits and free time burns.
Telex release (express release)
The supplier surrenders the original B/L at origin and the carrier instructs the destination office to release without it. Nothing needs to travel. It suits T/T once the balance is paid, and trusted relationships. The supplier's risk: once released, control is gone, so suppliers issue it after payment of the balance or the B/L-copy milestone.
Sea waybill
Not a document of title; the named consignee can collect without presenting anything. The simplest and fastest option for shipments between related companies or fully prepaid orders. Cannot be used under an L/C that calls for a B/L.
| Original B/L | Telex release | Sea waybill | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Document of title | Yes | Yes (surrendered at origin) | No |
| Supplier keeps control until | Original handed over | Release instructed | Never — consignee named |
| Speed at destination | Slowest | Fast | Fastest |
| Works with L/C, D/P | Yes | Usually no | No |
| Typical with | New relationships, bank terms | T/T after balance paid | Prepaid, intra-group |
On the Pacifica shipment page the B/L number links to the carrier's tracking, the B/L document is filed under Shipping Documents with its type (original / telex / waybill), and a documents-against-payment order shows “sent to bank” until the buyer pays.
Questions
Can I get a telex release before paying the balance?
Only if the supplier agrees; releasing the container is releasing the goods. Most suppliers issue it on receipt of the balance or the agreed milestone.
Is a telex release the same as an express release?
In practice yes; carriers use both names for releasing without an original B/L.
What happens if the original B/L arrives after the vessel?
The container waits at the terminal and demurrage starts once free time ends. Ask for a telex release or a bank guarantee to the carrier.
