Pacifica vs supplier portals
Large buyers have run supplier portals for twenty years. Suppliers, on the whole, dislike them.
What a traditional portal is for
Portals attached to procurement suites (SAP Ariba, Coupa, Jaggaer, GEP, Zycus and their peers) exist to move work from the buyer to the supplier: register here, upload certificates here, acknowledge the PO here, submit the invoice here in our format. They are good at compliance and audit trails, and they belong to one buyer. A supplier selling to eight customers may keep eight logins.
Why suppliers avoid them
Because nothing comes back. A portal tells the supplier what to do and rarely tells them what they most want to know: when will I be paid, and why is this invoice stuck. So the supplier does the minimum in the portal and everything else by email — and the buyer still has the email problem, now with a portal on top.
At a glance
| Traditional supplier portal | Pacifica | |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | The buyer's compliance | The order, seen by both sides |
| Supplier onboarding | Registration, training, a login per buyer | None — suppliers reply to email; one account across every buyer |
| Where updates come from | The supplier types them in | Emails, ERP records and carrier tracking, read automatically |
| What the supplier gets back | Little | Shipment position, document checklist, payment status with block reasons and dates |
| Logistics partners, brokers, banks | Outside the portal | Their emails attach to the order under their own tab, no login |
| Language | Usually the buyer's | Each user's own; messages translated in place |
| Time to value | Months, and a project | 30 seconds; first month free |
| Your brand | The vendor's | White label available |
Where a traditional portal still wins
Supplier qualification, sourcing events, contract management and an audit-grade record of who accepted which clause — that is what the suites are built for and Pacifica doesn't try to be one. Pacifica takes over after the PO: the daily traffic about samples, shipments, documents, invoices and payments that no portal has managed to pull out of email.
Can they coexist?
Yes, and often should. Keep the suite for onboarding and contracts; let Pacifica read the emails and ERP records that follow.
