Halal, Kosher, Organic, Non-GMO: certificates that name products.

These cover the products they list — not the plant. The question is always: is this product on the certificate?

In short. How product-specific certifications differ from facility certifications, which products they list, who issues them, how they expire, and how buyers track them per product and per order.

CertificationIssued byListsCommon buyer markets
HalalRecognised Halal certification bodies (recognition varies by importing country — e.g. JAKIM-recognised bodies for Malaysia, MUI for Indonesia)Named products from a siteMalaysia, Indonesia, Middle East, Singapore, halal product lines everywhere
KosherKosher agencies (OU, OK, Star-K, KLBD and others)Named products; may be pareve, dairy, meatUS, Israel, kosher product lines
OrganicAccredited certifiers under a regulation (USDA NOP, EU 2018/848, JAS, China GB/T)Named products and the operatorPer regulation; equivalence between some schemes
Non-GMONon-GMO Project and other verifiers, or identity-preserved supply documentationNamed productsUS, EU, Japan for soy, corn, canola derivatives

Recognition matters

A Halal certificate is only as good as the importing country's recognition of the body that issued it. Indonesia and Malaysia publish lists of recognised foreign bodies; a certificate from an unlisted body may be worthless at the border. Organic is similar: a JAS-certified product is not automatically EU-organic unless an equivalence applies.

Product lists and expiry

These certificates carry a schedule of products. A new SKU needs adding; a formulation change can void it. They typically expire annually. As with facility certificates, the risk is an expiry between PO and arrival, or a product missing from the schedule.

Pacifica records each product-scope certificate with the products it lists, sets per-product requirements (“this product requires Halal and Organic”), and warns on the supplier page and on new orders when a required certificate is missing, expiring, or does not list the product.

Questions

Does a Halal facility certificate cover all products from that plant?

Usually no — Halal certificates list products (and sometimes lines). Check that the product you buy is on the schedule.

Is USDA Organic accepted in Japan?

The US and Japan have an organic equivalence arrangement for many products, but labelling requirements still apply. Confirm per product.

How do I track certificates across 40 suppliers?

Store each with scope, issuer, number, expiry and file; set what each product requires; check on every order whether the requirement is met on the ETA date.
